What is also possible, is that what we perceive as our own mediocre work may well be received by OTHERS as the "good stuff". It's all so gloriously subjective!

Funny you should bring that aspect up. It’s pretty much been my mantra ever since I got into advertising. I remember being told by one of my teachers that in our career we would likely produce 1 to 2 awards-worthy ads, 10-15 really good ones, and hundreds and hundreds of mediocre or even bad ads. If we were really creative, we might be able to get those odds a bit higher, but probably not by much. His analogy was baseball: even the best hitters never break .400, meaning at most they hit 40% of the balls thrown at them, and of those, probably 1% (.004) are home runs. His point was not to celebrate mediocrity, of course, but to point out how much practice was needed (how many mediocre or bad ads you had to go through) to get to the good stuff.
